Fort William

Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles. (4,406 feet)
Scotland Journal, 5/26/98
Stopped for a pint in Spean Bridge -- not a friendly pub! Stopped off and tried for pix of Ben Nevis, but the mist was thick... .

Writing now at The Crofter restaurant in Fort William. It's half five now, maybe I can get a bar meal... . (Note: dinner was a very anemic curry.)

Calculations show that I won't have time to get film developed -- shops are closed tonight and I'll have to push it to make Glasgow in the morning and drop off the Rover. Well, maybe there's a shop at the airport or possibly I can talk them into hand-inspection... .

Well, I'd better finish this 80-shilling and find a phone to call mine host for the evening. I hope the car's not been clamped! (It was supposed to be a two-hour chit, plus unregulated after 6:00 -- unless I misread... .)

Scotland Journal, 5/27/98 (Written at Glasgow airport)
Called George Knox, Parkfield B&B (wife Phyllis, dog "Rusty," a Yorkshire terrier) and he came down to lead me to the house -- good thing, as directions wouldn't have gotten me there!

Very nice place, though no locks on the room doors. I later learned that it's not aggressively a B&B: It's mostly for friends but they do take referrals.

The only other guest last night was Mike, an Ambulance Service man from Skye. Nice enough guy although I suspect he holds what would be called "radical" political ideas -- got the impression that he romanticises the U.S. "Old West." Talked a lot, but at least he wasn't too boring.

Good breakfast this morning, then BSed with George & Rusty for awhile. Decided not to get film developed in Fort William, which was a good thing: Lots of roadworks on the A86 to Glasgow -- I'd have likely missed my flight if I'd hung around for an extra hour!

I'm writing this in the Executive Lounge at Glasgow airport -- this is the only way to travel!
