Project #1: The Hearth

BEFORE

My insurance company (and the local fire code) requires at least 18 inches of clearance between the door of a woodstove and any flammable surface such as carpeting. Since insurance ties back in to my mortgage as a prerequisite, extending the fireproof surface in front of the stove was priority 1. (And I can't even complain about whether it was a good idea: In the course of the project I found numerous burned areas that are now protected.) I took this photo while I had the slate tiles laid out for a test fit, but you can see that there was previously only about nine inches of clearance.

AFTER

With the extension complete there are about 19 inches of clearance in from of the stove. (Although I did have to modify one of my couches with the Skilsaw to fit afterward.)
