In Transit

I briefly considered snapping a photo and uploading it during the plane trip, but our in-flight entertainment, the comedy stylings of The Gay Cabineros ("Chad, Dan, and Todd, your Chicago-based flight attendants"), were just too diverting: Why, when Todd abandoned the safety briefing because Chad was making fun of him, I thought I'd bust a gut... not! (Besides, the AirPhone charges would've been exorbitant.)

Instead I spent the time on a little light reading: The C++ Primer Plus from the Mitchell Group. (At 1,020 pages, about the size of a Michner novel yet strangely lacking in plot, and I have yet to develop much sympathy for the characters.)

Day 1

This little bird was smelling the flowers in front of the hotel this morning. He seemed about to burst into song but I guess he forgot the words.

After a heartpounding eight hours exploring the mysteries of the Astoria document-management system, my colleague Rob and I relaxed with a leisurely five-mile inline speed-skate around Lake Miramar. (Unfortunately I couldn't think of a way to take the camera along without running the risk of falling on it... .)

Sunset in Rancho Bernardo. An idyllic vista above the sea of rental cars in the hotel parking lot and the whine of 18-wheelers on the conveniently nearby freeway.
This gallant chicken valiantly gave half its life that we might live. (I'm not sure what the other half went for, and who knows about the curry.)

I understand that Thai custom has it that a guest insults the generosity of the host by finishing the entire meal. Who'da thought it extended to restaurants?

Day 2

A rather pleasing fountain in the courtyard of the business park where our training is taking place. (What's apparently the Supervisor's Office of the Cleveland National Forest is in the background.)

Whaddya think this is, a vacation? (Most of the day was spent in thinking, sure, that makes sense... now, how the Hell do you do it in C++?)

Skating again this evening at Lake Miramar: I bought a sort-of fanny-pack today, so I should be able to take the camera tomorrow (though the destination may not be Miramar).

Day 3

Lake Miramar, aka Miramar Reservoir. I guess this impoundment is a (the?) water source for the city of San Diego. There's a rather cool road/path all the way around, a total distance of five miles.
Rob circles back to see what's keeping me. We'd intended to do two circuits this evening, but there just wasn't time: They lock the gate at 8:00 and we were in class until 6:30 and so didn't get to the lake 'til a quarter after 7:00.
The view from the top of Miramar dam. What are we seeing here? Got me: City.

Day 4

This is what it was all about.

In order to earn this certification I was required to implement a shared-memory multitasking operating system on a Z80 microprocessor...

No, not really, but it sure felt that way!
