Scotland Journal, 5/25/98 Went back to Plockton and took some pictures and sold some dollars, then on the single-track back through Duirinish and Balmacra to Dornie. Did the tour of Eilean Donan -- impressive, even though it's 1932 mortar between the stones... . Took more photos, including one of myself on the causeway in the rain. (Used the timer -- hope it comes out!) Bought some tourist junk in the new visitors' center and took a pic of the building so Mom can see it. Stopped in Dornie at the Dornie Hotel for lunch, and ended up spending several hours talking with the locals. Anecdote: One of the younger guys was giving a couple of the older ones a hard time about having straps on their glasses. The response (by Farquhar) was: "Aye, well when you're young you can remember where you left em!"One gent, Farquhar MacKenzie -- he's half a MacRae -- said there was a woman in Dornie who'd lived in Portland, and actually went and fetched her! Joan MacRae, about 70, and a very nice lady. She still has friends in Hillsboro, and gave me their number -- I promised I'd ring them up and tell them I'd talked with her. Turns out that she knows the Wilsons of Duirinish. I didn't get it quite straight, but it was something along the lines that she'd taught Ken in school... not sure. I got Farquhar to take a picture of me with Joan, and also of me with the pub crew. I got another shot of the whole crew, including young Maggie MacRae. I really hope these work -- 200 ASA FujiColor indoors, but the Olympus can handle it. If they come out I'll have to mail copies back there. I'm not sure of the address, but I can get it from Ken Wilson if I can catch his E-mail address. Otherwise I'll just try "Dornie Hotel." The owner's name is Ian, but I didn't catch his last name. |
